Zenko Kyudojo is pleased to announce our annual kyudo seminar guided by longtime practitioner Sam West! The dates for this gathering will be May 29th, 30th and 31st this year and will be held at Zenko Kyudojo in Boulder Colorado. I had the pleasure of beginning my own Kyudo journey by attending a first shot seminar with Sendai back when Sam was living in Boulder in June of year 2000. Sam’s mindful assessment and guiding of a student’s practice has come from his years of direct instruction from Sendai and Sensei, his observations of their teaching methods and his own growth as a kyudo practioner.
Sam began Kyudo in Boulder in 1980 with Sendai, Shibata Kanjuro Sensei XX. Sendai had been invited to teach the traditional Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha school of kyudo in Boulder, Colorado by Tibetan Meditation Master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. This invitation arose after Trungpa Rimpoche and Sendai formed a close personal relationship and deep respect for one another during a meeting in Japan after discussing the various ways meditation could produce an enlightened society.
Sam traveled to Kyudo programs with Sendai during the 80’s and then moved to Nova Scotia in 1987 where he became responsible for Kozan Kyudojo.
In 1999 Sendai requested Sam to move to Boulder to organize and develop all the Kyudojos within Zenko International. For a number of years Sam lived with Sendai, cared for him, studied Kyudo, and organized and traveled with Sendai to programs in North America and Europe.
In 2004, Sam moved to California at Sendai’s behest to help develop Kyudojos in Los Angeles, Ojai and at the Pullahari Retreat Center. Sam continued to work with Sendai assisting with national and international Kyudo programs during this time.
Since 2007, Sam has lived in Nova Scotia and continues to lead Kozan Kyudojo as well as leading programs in North America and Europe.
